Artist: Tom Waits
Track: Burma Shave
Album: Foreign Affairs
Year: 1977
Theme: CAR WRECKS
Why don’t you have another swig and pass that car if you’re so brave
I wanna get there before the sun comes up in Burma Shave
And the spider web crack and the mustang screamed
The smoke from the tires and the twisted machine
Just a nickel’s worth of dreams and every wishbone that they saved
Lie swindled from them on the way to Burma Shave
And the sun hit the derrick and cast a bat wing shadow
Up against the car door on the shotgun side
And when they pulled her from the wreck
You know she still had on her shades
They say that dreams are growing wild
Just this side
Of Burma Shave

“Somewhere Over The Rainbow” by Jimi Hendrix
Like Tupac and Johnny Cash, Jimi Hendrix continued making records after his death. This one, Crash Landing, stirred up a little controversy for being culled from demo tapes and buried in overdubs, and at some points the producer even erased tracks made by the musicians on the original recordings (though thankfully not Hendrix himself). So why does this record even exist? Well, Henrix died just as he was hitting his stride, and left his listeners wanting more; my point being, I’ll take what I can get. But know this: Even the scraps from Jimi’s table are worth checking out.
This Just In: One reader just reminded me that Crash Landing is out of print. I forgot to mention, what you’re listening to is a vinyl rip.
“Dirty Water” by The Standells
The first time I heard contemporary Garage Rock, I thought Punks had rediscovered Psychedelia. But back in the day, for a brief shining moment before it evolved into pretentious Prog Rock, this genre was a genuinely vibrant movement, and I can’t imagine a better way to introduce you to Psychedelic Rock than this compilation. From Wikipedia:
Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era is a groundbreaking compilation album of American garage rock singles released in the mid-to-late 1960s. It was assembled by Jac Holzman, founder of Elektra Records, and Lenny Kaye, later lead guitarist for the Patti Smith Group. The original double album was released on LP by Elektra in 1972 with liner notes by Kaye that contained one of the first uses of the term “punk rock”
